If you have any concerns about
employing someone with interests in this field ask yourself would you have the
same qualms about employing a person with active interests in Christianity or
Judaism? If you have reservations about irrational beliefs per se, then
religion falls into the same category. Belief in a creator is as far (if not
further) outside of the modern scientific world view as an interest in the occult.
If you think that an interest in the occult is no different to a belief in God,
then this just indicates that you don't fully understand the field.
This field is basically an
interest in the philosophy of beliefs and my perspective includes considerable
discrimination when it comes to sorting the wheat from the bullshit. This includes
making informed, and usually rational, choices about what to believe. As such
it is not a religious perspective because religions usually include some sort
of doctrine, which the occult does not (usually). At the end of the day it's
about understanding the difference between knowledge and belief, while not taking
yourself too seriously. If you want to know more, then you might start by reading
the article about Harrison's Paradox on The
Philosopher's Stone.
On the other hand, if you
have reservations about all this which originate from your own religious beliefs,
then you really do need to read on and particularly to look at The Philosopher's
Stone. However, I suspect we may never see completely eye to eye.
Finally, if you are okay with all this but just
a little curious, and your lunch times are getting a bit boring, then you cannot
afford not to employ me.
